Tonight we celebrate Lotus Lantern Night, the beginning of our week-long celebration of Buddha's birthday.A lantern lights up darkness, but light never said to darkness, "I am light", and darkness never said to itself, "I am darkness". To be a Buddha is to be awakened, yet who is it that sleeps?
One day, the monk Mazu Daoyi drew a circle on the ground with his staff and said, "If you enter, I'll hit you thirty times. If you do not enter, I will hit you thirty times."
This week, in your personal practice, contemplate on how you would respond to Mazu. Join us for our weekly Dharma meeting on Tuesday, and Friday for our Buddha's Birthday meditation meeting, followed by a celebratory dinner and bonfire.
