February Events at the BZC!

The Year of the Tiger is fast approaching, and this is going to be a great year for you & the BZC. We are greatly expanding our events and programs. One of the things we always hear from people is that they'd love to come begin their Zen practice, but unfortunately the timing just wasn't right. In the Year of the Tiger, we're expanding our hours and programs for you!

We will still be running our regular Tuesday night Dharma Study from 7 to 9 in the Hermitage. This is a great class for beginners to come with questions, to learn about the basic teachings of Buddhism and the practices of Zen. Classes are lead by JB MuSsang Jaeger, and mix sitting meditation, tea ceremony, and open discussion. Guest speakers also lead class, including Joe McParland.

We'll be adding two or three Thursday night sitting sessions a month, in addition to our Saturday events and retreats.

We hope the Year of the Tiger is a great one for you, and that you'll join us at the Baltimore Zen Center to ring in the New Year!

Thursday Night Jwaseon

Thursday, February 18th
7pm to 9pm

Come to the Baltimore Zen Center for Thursday night Sitting Meditation. This two hour period is devoted to those who want to practice Jwaseon, a form of meditation known as Sitting Zen. During Jwaseon practice, we learn to introspect upon ourselves, to find the truth within us, and learn how to return to our own true nature.

Practice is from 7pm to 9pm in the Dharma Hall or the Hermitage, depending on the weather. This is a great practice for beginners and those with no Zen or meditation experience. Come as you are, come with questions!

Gwanseum Evening Retreat

Friday, February 19th
7pm to 11pm

Gwanseum, or Avalokita, is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion & Mercy. Represented by the figure of a beautiful woman, she is said to have a thousand hands with which to help all those who suffer. The metaphor means that each of us are two hands of compassion, working in this world.

During this evening practice session we will alternate periods of sitting meditation with chanting & prostrations, three of the primary practice exercises at the Baltimore Zen Center. We will ponder teachings of selflessness & compassion as we chant the Heart Sutra, the Thousand Hands Sutra, and the Universal Door chant of the Lotus Sutra.

The retreat will begin with evening meditation liturgy, and will include a brief Dharma talk by JB MuSsang Jaeger.

Suggested donation: $20

Lunar New Year Celebration!
Saturday, February 20th
9am to 5pm

Across the globe, Lunar New Year festivities typically last an entire week, and at the Baltimore Zen Center, we're celebrating the end of this festival period together with family and friends! The New Year is a time to begin our Zen practice anew and come together as a Sangha to encourage each other for the coming year.

We'll enjoy a day of food, martial art performances, poetry, and of course the New Year Ceremony. We'll start the day with a meditation period, and pay respect to our teachers and ancestors.

The ceremony begins at 9am, and the Dharma Hall will be open all day for anyone who would like to practice sitting meditation, offer incense or donations. We will have a delicious vegetarian lunch at noon, and activities and demonstrations following.

There will be gifts of red envelopes for the Sangha's children and any younger guests!
